A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE J.G. "PETE" OWENS OF CHESTERFIELD UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE AREA COMMISSION OF NORTHEASTERN TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND TO WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to learn that Mr. J.G. "Pete" Owens of Chesterfield will enter a much-deserved retirement this year; and

Whereas, on May 29, 1985, Mr. Owens was appointed to the Area Commission of what was then the Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College, and has served continuously for the past thirty years, including two terms as chairman; and

Whereas, during his tenure on the NETC board, the college opened three community campuses to better serve the citizens and employers of Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Dillon Counties. Mr. Owens was also instrumental in establishing the curriculum for the associate degree program in registered nursing; and

Whereas, Mr. Owens retired in 2006 from a distinguished career with B.C. Moore and Sons, having served as executive vice president and director of the company; and

Whereas, since retiring, Mr. Owens has invested in tomorrow's leaders by serving as a mentor at Cheraw Primary School, working with young boys who need a strong and positive male influence; and

Whereas, Mr. Owens is an active member of First United Methodist church in Cheraw, where he serves as the treasurer emeritus and has previously served on the Strategic Planning Team and the Church Council; and

Whereas, Mr. Owens and his family have established a scholarship to support local students pursuing their education at Northeastern Technical College; and

Whereas, he has been selected twice by the NETC Student Government Association to receive the "Outstanding Contributor to Technical Education" award, most recently in May 2015; and

Whereas, grateful for Mr. Owens' commitment to the citizens of South Carolina and students of Northeastern Technical College, the members of the Senate take great pleasure in recognizing his many years of outstanding service. The members wish him well as he enters retirement and trust he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate J.G. "Pete" Owens of Chesterfield upon the occasion of his retirement from the Area Commission of Northeastern Technical College and wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. J.G. "Pete" Owens.
