TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE CALHOUN ACADEMY FOOTBALL TEAM ON AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEIR TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS ON WINNING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION'S CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the Calhoun Academy football team took top honors at the SCISA State Championship game at Benedict College's Charlie W. Johnson Stadium on November 21, 2015; and
Whereas, after a season riddled with injury and setbacks, the team rallied to complete the championship game with a 28-7 win against Bethesda Academy. The victory was the program's first state title in eleven seasons, and the first championship win for Coach Bill Spiers; and
Whereas, by halftime, the Cavaliers were up 28-7 and the team's defensive players held off Bethesda Academy for a scoreless second half. The Cavaliers finished the season with a 10-3 record; and
Whereas, the Cavaliers' offense had an outstanding evening. Junior Fuller Prickett had eleven carries for one hundred yards and a rushing touchdown from seventeen yards out. Senior tailback Maxwell Moore carried the ball fourteen times for one hundred eight yards. Senior quarterback Will Spiers made eleven of sixteen passes for one hundred thirty-seven yards and threw four touchdown passes, one to Christopher Phillips, and the remaining three to Fuller Prickett; and
Whereas, in addition, the defensive players performed exceptionally well. They gave up only one play, which led to Bethesda's touchdown run. Senior linebacker Blake Huddleston had fourteen tackles, junior defensive back Elijah Ott had ten, and senior defensive lineman Giuliano Decanini had eight tackles and a pass deflection. The defense made stops on two fourth-down plays in the first half and two more in the second half; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength and agility, speed and accuracy, Coach Spiers and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their training to create a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable both on and off the field; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that the Calhoun Academy football players have brought to their school and community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Calhoun Academy football team on an outstanding season and congratulate their team, coaches, and school officials on winning the South Carolina Independent School Association's Class AA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Bill Spiers.
