TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CHAKA KHAN FOR HER OUTSTANDING CAREER AS A SINGER, SONGWRITER, ACTOR, AND ACTIVIST WHICH HAS SPANNED FIVE DECADES AND TO WELCOME HER TO THE PALMETTO STATE AS THE FEATURED ARTIST AT THE 2015 LEGENDS OF...CONCERT SERIES.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that the gifted Chaka Khan will be performing at the Koger Center for the Arts in Columbia to celebrate the 12th Annual Legends of...Concert Series on February 20, 2015; and
Whereas, since the nascent days of her musical career as lead singer with the band Rufus, Chaka Khan has received ten GRAMMY Awards. Her first GRAMMY was for the single "Tell Me Something Good" written by Stevie Wonder from the 1974 platinum album From Rags to Rufus; and
Whereas, Chaka Khan has released twenty-two albums in her forty-year career, ten of which were RIAA certified gold and platinum, and five of those gold and platinums were during her time with Rufus; and
Whereas, over the years, she has produced ten singles that were number one on the Billboard magazine chart and seven that were RIAA certified gold singles. In 1978, she released the smash hit "I'm Every Woman," as a solo artist; and
Whereas, she has recorded vocals for a number of soundtracks, such as Miami Vice, White Knights, Waiting to Exhale, and Madea's Family Reunion; and
Whereas, in 1995, she debuted in musical theater on London's West End, starring in Mama, I Want to Sing! In 2002, she starred in Signed, Sealed, Delivered, a critically-acclaimed musical based on the music of Stevie Wonder, on stage in Las Vegas; and she took to Broadway in 2008 in the role of Sofia in Oprah Winfrey's musical, The Color Purple; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly appreciate the unparalleled talent and widely-varied work of Chaka Khan and are grateful for her performance in support of the Auntie Karen's Foundation 2015 Legends of...Concert Series. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Chaka Khan for her outstanding career as a singer, songwriter, actor, and activist which has spanned five decades and welcome her to the Palmetto State as the featured artist at the 2015 Legends of...Concert Series.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Chaka Khan.
