TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CALHOUN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2016 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Calhoun County High School basketball team of St. Matthews took top honors at the state competition held at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Saturday, March 5, 2016; and
Whereas, to the sheer delight of their faithful and exuberant fans, the Saints defeated the Hemingway High School Tigers 65-55 to secure the team's ninth state championship; and
Whereas, through the years, Head Coach Zam Fredrick's teams have been know for their powerhouse defense, and in the 2016 state championship game, the Calhoun defense made twenty steals on the Tigers and pressed them into thirty-seven turnovers; and
Whereas, with the Saints leading by only one point, 13-12, after the first quarter, Calhoun's six-foot-seven junior center Stantell Jones entered the lineup in the second quarter. In just fifteen minutes of play, he blocked a game-high five shots, and Calhoun hit the backboards with seven unanswered points to end the first half with a 31-26 lead; and
Whereas, Calhoun kept Hemingway scoreless in the last two minutes of the third quarter and the first minute of the fourth to build a 48-33 lead early in the last quarter. Taking the title with a final score of 65-55, the Saints posted a remarkable 22-4 season; and
Whereas, Calhoun's senior point guard Johnathan Smith led the Saints with fourteen points, four assists, and five steals, followed by senior wing guard Marquise Greene with ten points and five rebounds; senior wing guard Emmitt Holston with nine points and seven rebounds; Tyreek Goodwine with nine points; senior forward Anthony Browne with eight points, six rebounds, and four steals; senior forward Malik Johnson seven points, ten rebounds, and three assists; Justin Williams four points and a game-high seven steals; and Zamuel Fredrick and Stantell Jones both with two; and
Whereas, this ninth state title under Coach Fredrick landed him a spot in the South Carolina High School League record books as the number-one title-winning coach in state history, claiming nine trophies in eleven appearances at championship games, including four titles on the class AA level; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility, and accuracy, Coach Fredrick and his skilled coaching staff maximized their own athletic experience and training to produce a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the deep pride and recognition that the Calhoun basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Calhoun County High School varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2016 South Carolina Class A State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Cynthia T. Johnson and Coach Zam Fredrick.
