A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF DR. KENNETH LEE DEHART, JR., OF MYRTLE BEACH AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Kenneth Lee DeHart, Jr., of Myrtle Beach on March 17, 2016; and

Whereas, born March 26, 1953, in Muncie, Indiana, Ken DeHart earned his bachelor's degree from Wabash College in Indiana, where he served as student body president and graduated summa cum laude in 1975. Four years later, he graduated from Indiana University with his M.D. He went on to complete his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1982; and

Whereas, Dr. DeHart served as medical director at Logansport Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Indiana before moving to Myrtle Beach in 1986. He was a board-certified emergency medicine specialist and was medical director at Grand Strand Regional Hospital from 1986 to 1992; and

Whereas, known as a visionary in the field of emergency medicine, he constantly worked toward his goal of providing uncompromised emergency care to the community while at the same time recruiting the best physicians in the country to assist with this endeavor; and

Whereas, Dr. DeHart founded Carolina Health Specialists, a multispecialty physician practice, in order to increase the excellent care offered to his community, and he successfully brought more than one hundred physicians to Myrtle Beach; and

Whereas, as an active member of his profession, he served his colleagues in the same way he served his patients, with distinction and dedication. He was formerly president of the Horry County Medical Society and chairman of the National Emergency Medicine Political Action Committee Board of Trustees. He served on countless editorial and advisory panels for the American Medical Association, and, in 1998, he received the prestigious American College of Emergency Physicians' James D. Mills Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medicine award; and

Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory a host of family members and friends. Dr. Ken DeHart, a good man of great vision and genius who brought out the good in others, will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Dr. Kenneth Lee DeHart, Jr., of Myrtle Beach and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Kenneth Lee DeHart, Jr.
