TO SALUTE THE DORMAN HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THE TEAM'S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF ON CAPTURING THE 2017 CLASS AAAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, well prepared for the challenge, the Dorman High School volleyball team (43-6-1) powered its way to the 2017 Class AAAAA State Championship title, defeating Wando with a 3-1 win on November 4, 2017, at Chapin High School; and
Whereas, having made it to the mountaintop last year, the Dorman players liked the view so much that they climbed to the pinnacle again in the 2017 championship competition. The Lady Cavaliers triumphantly took home their second straight AAAAA volleyball title, and it felt good; and
Whereas, near the end of the title bout, it took the Cavs three tries to get the shot they wanted. Leading Wando 24-18 and 2-1, Dorman tried desperately to get a set in place for a Thayer Hall kill. Finally, Grace Metcalf's set was perfect, Thayer Hall sent an attack caroming off a Wando player and nearly into the stands, and Dorman clinched a thirteenth state volleyball title; and
Whereas, the awards that have poured in for this team are numerous. MVP Thayer Hall was named a South Carolina North-South All-Star, AAAAA Player of the Year, and National Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as Player of the Year for a number of other entities. She and Anna Renwick were named SCCAWS All-State, and Thayer Hall (Miss Volleyball), Omara Daniels, Lauren Cauthan, Garland Hough, Anna Renwick, and Leslie Timms were named High School Sports Report All-State. The HSSR All-Rookie Team tapped Grace Metcalf and Lauren Mims for its roster, and Thayer Hall and Grace Metcalf were named MaxPreps All-American. In addition, Thayer Hall set a record with her 2000th career kill, Anna Renwick set her own record with her 1000th career dig, and Grace Metcalf racked up her 1000th career assist; and
Whereas, with grueling practices, hard work, and commitment, Coach Paula Kirkland built her volleyball program into a championship machine and plans to keep it that way; and
Whereas, the Dorman High School volleyball team has brought great pride and recognition to its school and community, and the House of Representatives is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such a wonderful group of young women. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute the Dorman High School volleyball team for its outstanding season and congratulate the team's exceptional players, coaches, and staff on capturing the 2017 Class AAAAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Ken Kiser and Coach Paula Kirkland of Dorman High School.
