COMMITTEE REPORT

March 5, 2020

S. 1051

Introduced by Senator Campbell

S. Printed 3/5/20--S.    [SEC 3/6/20 11:15 AM]

Read the first time January 28, 2020.

THE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION

To whom was referred a Senate Resolution (S. 1051) to recognize November 19, 2020, as "Transportation Security Administration Appreciation Day", etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

LAWRENCE K. GROOMS for Committee.

A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE NOVEMBER 19, 2020, AS "TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION APPRECIATION DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, on November 19, 2001, President George W. Bush signed into law the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which established the Transportation Security Administration after the terrorist hijackings of airplanes on September 11, 2001; and

Whereas, Transportation Security Administration workers protect the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce, both in the State of South Carolina and across the United States; and

Whereas, the Transportation Security Administration works collaboratively with a wide range of partners, such as aviation and surface transportation industry stakeholders, intelligence professionals, and law enforcement professionals; and

Whereas, every day, more than 44,000 Transportation Security Administration officers screen over two million passengers, 1.3 million checked items, and 4.9 million carry-on items at more than 430 airports; and

Whereas, Transportation Security Administration workers in South Carolina monitor airport activity for security threats on a daily basis, allowing people across the world to safely enter and exit the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, during the month of July 2019, the six airports in South Carolina screened nearly 650 thousand passengers, contributing to a record-setting month for the agency; and

Whereas, during the government shutdown in January 2019, Transportation Security Administration workers remained unpaid. Despite not being paid, many South Carolina Transportation Security Administration workers showed up to the airport and prevented major flight delays, in contrast to the proliferation of delays across the country; and

Whereas, South Carolinians who work for the Transportation Security Administration deserve to be recognized for their extraordinary service during the January 2019 shutdown and for their dedication to the essential daily work of our six airports across South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize November 19, 2020, as "Transportation Security Administration Appreciation Day" in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of the Transportation Security Administration as evidence of the General Assembly's appreciation and esteem.
