VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF NIGEL M. "NICKY" MAHAFFEY, JR., OF COLUMBIA AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Nigel M. Mahaffey, Jr., of Columbia on June 25, 2020, at the age of sixty; and
Whereas, born in Greenville on August 7, 1959, and affectionately known as "Nicky," he was the son of Nigel Mahaffey, Sr., and Eloise (Miller) Bagwell; and
Whereas, having grown up in Greenville, Nigel made Columbia his home for thirty-six years until his passing. He loved life and was one of the most joyful people to grace this Earth; and
Whereas, over the course of his career, he worked in the textile industry as a weaver and quality specialist. In addition, he served as a hairstylist, florist, bartender, bar manager, newspaper publisher, political consultant, and caregiver to his aging parents; and
Whereas, he also supported, and volunteered with, a multitude of charities and nonprofits during his life, including his neighborhood organization, Brandon Acres/Cedar Terrace, which he served as treasurer; and
Whereas, preceded in death by his brother Tony Mahaffey and two stepfathers, Ralph Stansell and Fred Bagwell, Nigel leaves to cherish his memory his husband, Tige Watts; his mother, Eloise; his father, Nigel Sr.; his sisters, Debbie Owens (Fred) and Dawn Bagwell Shams (Nadim); his surviving brothers, Richard Mahaffey, Michael Stansell (Ellen), and Randall Stansell (Elaine); and
Whereas, he is further survived by many loving nieces and nephews, Philip Harris (Kerry), David Harris (Tracy), Matthew Hill (Kasie), Kelly Howard (Josh), Jennifer Roach (David), Nicole Stansell, Christopher Stansell, Tyler Mahaffey (Erin), Charles Stansell (Gloria), Melissa Good (Davin), and Zak Shams. He also leaves his grandmother-in-law, Margaret Maxwell; many aunts, cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and a host of other family members and friends. He will be missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Nigel M. "Nicky" Mahaffey, Jr., of Columbia and their deepest sympathy be extended to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family.
