TO CONGRATULATE MARGERY TOOLE SMOAK OF AIKEN COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Margery Toole Smoak of Aiken County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on February 3, 2019; and
Whereas, born on February 3, 1919, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed ten decades of remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and
Whereas, the daughter of Lillian Winifred Jones and Frampton Wyman Toole, Sr., Margery was reared in Aiken and graduated with honors from Converse College; and
Whereas, when she married her beloved husband, Robert Adams Smoak, Sr., on February 17, 1941, she left her hometown to see the world as a military wife for thirty years before he retired at the rank of Colonel; and
Whereas, the Smoaks lived in San Francisco, California; Sellersville, Pennsylvania; Stuttgart, Germany; Ft. Eustis, Virginia; Washington, D. C.; La Rochelle, France; and Healdsburg, Germany, before coming full circle to retire in Aiken; and
Whereas, together with her husband, Margery Smoak reared three fine children: Robert Adams Smoak, Jr.; Pamela Smoak Batz; and Frank Andrew Smoak; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her centennial birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Margery Toole Smoak of Aiken County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Margery Toole Smoak.
