VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE FLORENCE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR A STELLAR SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2018 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Florence Christian football team of Florence County took top honors at the state competition held at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia on Saturday, November 17, 2018; and
Whereas, to the cheers of their jubilant fans, the Florence Christian Eagles defeated the John Paul II Catholic School 49-6, capturing the team's first state title since 2013; and
Whereas, with a powerful running game, the Eagles brought their 9-2 season to a finale at their peak performance in the championship game by rushing their way to the goal line with 333 yards on 55 carries; and
Whereas, they pounded the John Paul Golden Warriors and held their total offense to only 143 yards; and
Whereas, Florence Christian's Eli Brayboy rushed for 168 yards and four touchdowns, and teammate Marshall Brown rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, both surpassing 100 yards by halftime; and
Whereas, after the Eagles had posted twenty-one points in the first quarter and after the Brayboy-Brown duo managed an easy fourteen more in the second quarter, the Golden Warriors finally found their way to the scoreboard with their only six points of the game; and
Whereas, Florence Christian's Robbie Jordan completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Kelly, slapping another touchdown on the lead before the teams took to the lockers for halftime; and
Whereas, both teams blanked the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter Eli Brayboy took a handoff and raced yet another 23 yards for a final score, sealing the Eagles' 49-6 victory; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, expertise, and determination, Head Coach Neil Minton and his skilled coaching staff utilized their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the gridiron; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Florence Christian football players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Florence Christian School varsity football team, coaches, and school officials for a stellar season and congratulate them for winning the 2018 South Carolina Class 2A Independent School Association State Championship title.
