VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW AND DEEP SENSE OF LOSS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF COLONEL DEAN EDWARD HUTTER, UNITED STATES ARMY, RETIRED, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Colonel Dean E. Hutter of Richland County at the age of ninety-eight on January 9, 2020; and
Whereas, born and reared in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Dean Hutter was the son of Edward Hutter, an equestrian and grocer, and Anna Hutter, a pianist who taught him to appreciate the beauty of classical music, especially Chopin; and
Whereas, during his twenties, he played the piano on his own radio program in Aurora, Illinois, and considered becoming a concert pianist before joining the United States Army. His love of classical music and musical theatre remained a source of pleasure throughout his life; and
Whereas, Colonel Hutter earned a bachelor's degree from Coe College and master degrees in personnel management from The George Washington University and in communication from the University of Hawaii; and
Whereas, together with his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Helen, he reared three fine children: Debra Pletcher, Paul Hutter, and Diane Gilbert. These children blessed him with the affection of ten adoring grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom benefitted immeasurably from his guiding mentorship, his wise counsel, and his enthusiastic encouragement; and
Whereas, Colonel Hutter served in the military with distinction for twenty-eight years in combat roles during World War II and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. He spoke four languages fluently, a skill that enhanced all of his service in station assignments in France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Vietnam, Virginia, and California, as well as his favorite place in the world, Hawaii; and
Whereas, in recognition of his valor, Colonel Hutter was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, two Legions of Merit, the French Croix de Guerre, the Italian Award for War Merit, two Vietnamese Medals of Gallantry, and the Army Commendation Medal. He also received the Keys to the City of Paris for his service with the French Army; and
Whereas, he earned a doctorate in business from the University of Bath, and Dr. Hutter was honored as a Fellow of the British Institute of Management; and
Whereas, after retiring from the Army, he served as a professor and dean of business for forty-two years at Chaminade University in Hawaii and Strayer University. While teaching at Chaminade University, Dr. Hutter was honored as Teacher of the Year for seventeen consecutive years until the award was retired; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Dean Hutter, a distinguished soldier, inspiring scholar, accomplished musician, and devoted family man, and for the example of excellence he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow and deep sense of loss upon the passing of Colonel Dean Edward Hutter, United States Army, Retired, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Colonel Dean Edward Hutter, United States Army, Retired.
