VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE NORTH CHARLESTON HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR CAPTURING THE 2020 CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR THE TEAM'S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.
Whereas, fully prepared for the challenge, the North Charleston High School girls basketball team crowned a 22-9 season by capturing the 2020 Class AA State Championship title, defeating Christ Church 38-34 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia on Friday, March 6, 2020; and
Whereas, with the win, the Lady Cougars claimed their first state title in basketball since 1984, breaking a thirty-six-year drought. North Charleston's new hardware looked that much more beautiful to the Lady Cougars because they beat a team that had grabbed four of the last six state championships; and
Whereas, down by four at the half, North Charleston kept the game close, down 30-29 at the start of the fourth quarter; and
Whereas, the defense held strong in the final frame, allowing only four points, and the Lady Cougars were able to complete the comeback to win the title. When the clock hit zero, North Charleston's ecstatic fans burst into well-deserved cheers, and sports pundits began to predict a repeat triumph for next year; and
Whereas, Head Coach Haley Weed, who had honed her players into a championship machine, saw the fruits of her labors as her players hoisted the title trophy; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing the young women of the North Charleston High School girls basketball team for leading with excellence both in the classroom and on the court and expects to hear of continued great achievements in the years ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the North Charleston High School girls basketball team for capturing the 2020 Class AA state championship title and honor the team's exceptional players, coaches, and staff.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Henry E. Darby and Head Coach Haley Weed of North Charleston High School.
