VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE ROBERT "BOB" SCHERER FOR HIS TWENTY-THREE YEARS OF SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE AMERICAN LEGION AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Robert "Bob" Scherer; and
Whereas, a veteran of the United States Air Force, Bob served during the Vietnam Era for four years, with two years of reserve duty. He was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant; and
Whereas, a life member of The American Legion with over twenty-three years of service, Mr. Scherer joined the organization in 1966. He has held several offices at the post, district, state department, and national levels, including district commander, National Security Committee member, and state commander. During his time as state commander, Bob served the State well, increasing state-wide membership for the first time since 2008, opening communication between the legionnaires and the state department, and traveling throughout the State, where he sparked enthusiasm in many and revitalized a number of posts. With a focus on child and welfare, Bob personally raised two thousand three hundred dollars in donations during his tenure as state commander; and
Whereas, Bob is currently an active member of Post 45 in Inman South Carolina, where he has helped spur the post's development, with over twenty percent growth in the past three years. In recent years, he has served as post coordinator for Wreaths Across American, and he continues to serve on the post's executive committee and as alternate national executive committeeman, representing South Carolina on the national level. Bob has also been instrumental in establishing a veterans program for Hospice of South Carolina and in forming three honor guards for final military rites in South Carolina; and
Whereas, an active leader in his community, Bob volunteers at the Gibbs Cancer Center, where he has contributed over five thousand volunteer hours since 2012. In October 2013, he was recognized as Volunteer of the Month. He is also involved with the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Volunteer Executive Board, the Sunrise Civitan Club of Spartanburg, the Special Olympics, Disabled American Veterans, and the Board of Directors for the Friends of Fisher House; and
Whereas, Bob is married to Sherri Scherer, and together, they reside in Spartanburg. They are members of St. John's Lutheran Church, where Bob is an active member of the Church Council; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that Robert "Bob" Scherer has brought to The American Legion, the Spartanburg community, and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor and recognize Robert "Bob" Scherer for his twenty-three years of significant contributions to The American Legion and the State of South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Robert "Bob" Scherer.
