TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR TRAVIS ALLEN JOHNSON OF LYNCHBURG AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON HIS SELECTION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 57TH ANNUAL UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Travis Allen Johnson has been chosen as one of only two students to represent the Palmetto State in the 57th Annual United States Senate Youth Program in March 2019; and
Whereas, a resident of Lynchburg, Travis Johnson is the son of Elaine and Derick Johnson and is a junior at Crestwood High School in the Sumter County School District. Travis currently serves as South Carolina Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state president and is the junior class president at Crestwood High School; and
Whereas, for fifty-seven years, the United States Senate Youth Program, an extremely competitive merit-based program, has brought one hundred four of the most outstanding high school students to Washington, D.C., for an intensive week-long study of the federal government and the people who lead it; and
Whereas, while in Washington, the students will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Department of State and the Department of Defense, and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in meetings with the president and a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court; and
Whereas, in addition to funding the student delegates' attendance at Washington Week, the Hearst Foundation will provide each of them with a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship and will encourage them to continue their educational coursework in government, history, and public affairs. Transportation and all expenses for Washington Week will be provided by the Hearst Foundation; no government funds are utilized; and
Whereas, a leader in both academics and student activities, Travis Johnson hopes to graduate from Duke University in North Carolina and law school; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the pride and recognition Travis Johnson has brought to his family, his school, his community, and his State, and they applaud his selection to the United States Senate Youth Program. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Travis Allen Johnson of Lynchburg and congratulate him on his selection to participate in the 57th Annual United States Senate Youth Program.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Travis Johnson.
