VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CONGRATULATE THE EPSILON EPSILON CHAPTER OF OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC., FOR SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITY OF COLUMBIA, COUNTY OF RICHLAND, AND STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD, AND TO DECLARE APRIL 2, 2022, AS "EPSILON EPSILON CHAPTER DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, it is altogether fitting and proper that the South Carolina Senate should pause in its deliberations to honor the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the significant work of this organization and to honor the members upon their 75th Anniversary Celebration held March 27 through April 3, 2022; and
Whereas, the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of an historically black college, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., promotes the cardinal principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift; and
Whereas, the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., was the first fraternal Greek letter organization founded on the campus of Benedict College in Columbia on May 8, 1947, by undergraduates Luns C. Richardson, Zack J. Weston, Herman J. Kirby, Willis Brown, Jr., Marquis D. Singleton, Coolidge M. Johnson, Francis M. Jones, Jr., Charlton C. Caldwell, Cole Gilliam, Ezekiel Jefferson, Daniel Brockman, and their faculty advisor Brother Theodore Jefferson Hanberry, Dean of Students; and
Whereas, the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter has enjoyed the loyal and dedicated service of more than four hundred forty members of this illustrious organization since the chapter was founded, and the character of life in Richland County, as well as surrounding communities, reflects the steadfast efforts these men have exemplified in giving themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry in many diverse fields of endeavor; and
Whereas, the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter has participated in activities that uplifted their communities, including voter registration, illiteracy awareness, Habitat for Humanity, health awareness programs, blood and COVID drives, achievement weeks, college endowment funds, talent-hunt programs, the NAACP, scholarships, social action, and youth mentoring; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate celebrate organizations of noble aims and accomplishments, such as the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and encourage all citizens in the Palmetto State to recognize the worth of this distinguished organization. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., for seventy five years of service to the City of Columbia, County of Richland, and State of South Carolina, as well as throughout the United States and the world, and declare April 2, 2022, as "Epsilon Epsilon Chapter Day" in South Carolina.
