VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND CORDIALLY WELCOME TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE HOUSE THE HONORABLE ELIZABETH SACKEY, MADAM MAYOR OF ACCRA, GHANA.
Whereas, in September 2021, the Honorable Elizabeth Sackey was elected to serve and was unanimously confirmed by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly as the first woman mayor of the city of Accra; and
Whereas, Mayor Sackey holds a Bachelor of Science in public administration from the University of Ghana, Legon. Before acquiring her degree, she pursued a course in marketing at the Academy of Business Administration where she obtained a certificate in marketing; and
Whereas, before venturing into politics, Mayor Sackey worked as a chief clerk for the Ghana Commercial Bank from 1983 to 2005; and
Whereas, she also served as a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament during the same period. She also served as the assembly member for the Akweteman Electoral Area from 2002 to 2006; and
Whereas, between 2005 and 2017, Mayor Sackey represented the people of Okaikwei North Constituency as their Member of Parliament (MP) where she served on the Employment, State Enterprises and Social Welfare, Environment, Science and Technology, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Trade, Industry and Tourism as well as Mines and Energy Committees; and
Whereas, prior to her appointment as the first woman chief executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mayor Sackey served as the deputy minister for the Greater Accra Region in the first term of the President of Ghana, His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's government from 2017 to 2020; and
Whereas, upon her visit to the South Carolina State House on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, it is fitting that the members of the South Carolina Senate should recognize Mayor Sackey and greet her in the name of all the citizens of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and cordially welcome to the South Carolina State House the Honorable Elizabeth Sackey, Mayor of Accra, Ghana.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Elizabeth Sackey.
