A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INC., FOR ITS MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND AROUND THE WORLD, TO WELCOME MEMBERS OF THE FRATERNITY TO SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF THE ORGANIZATION'S INTERNATIONAL CONCLAVE, AND TO DECLARE AUGUST 3-8, 2021, AS "PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INC., WEEK" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to welcome Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., to the Palmetto State as more than fourteen hundred of the organization's members and their families gather in Myrtle Beach for its international conclave, to be held in August 2021; and

Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three Black students: the Honorable A. Langston Taylor, the Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and the Honorable Charles I. Brown; and

Whereas, the founders of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, holding a deep conviction that they should return the skills acquired at institutions of higher learning to the communities from which they came, adopted the motto "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity" to exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service; and

Whereas, only three years after the founding of the fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was formed at Howard University on January 16, 1920, and the organizations are constitutionally bound to one another; and

Whereas, South Carolina's state organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., is part of the fraternity's Southeastern Region; and

Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity chartered its first South Carolina chapter, the Omicrom chapter, at Claflin University in Orangeburg on December 11, 1923; and

Whereas, members of the fraternity have assisted in establishing the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation; the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union; and the National Sigma Beta Club Foundation, an affiliate entity for young men ages eight to eighteen; and

Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., operates from collegiate chapters on college campuses across the Palmetto State and as alumni chapters in cities throughout the State; and

Whereas, the fraternity remains effective by encouraging members to strengthen and support the brotherhood; maintain a strong commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and service; remain committed to serving humanity; respect the dignity and worth of each brother; exhibit integrity and ethical behavior; maintain and improve the fraternity's technological literacy; strengthen the constitutional bond with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; build beneficial working relationships with fellow Greek-letter organizations and other organizations that serve the community; and select leaders who demonstrate an ability to lead; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the decades of service that Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., has devoted in service to humanity and is delighted to welcome its members to the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., for its many years of dedicated service in local communities and around the world, welcome members of the fraternity to South Carolina on the occasion of the organization's international conclave, and declare August 3-8, 2021, as "Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Week" in South Carolina.
