A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LAKES AND BRIDGES CHARTER SCHOOL FOR THE WORK OF PROVIDING AN UNPARALLELED LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO SERVE THE DISTINCT EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF STUDENTS WITH DYSLEXIA WHO MAY STRUGGLE WITH THE STRUCTURE OF LANGUAGE AND TO DECLARE APRIL 6, 2022, AS "LAKES AND BRIDGES CHARTER SCHOOL DAY" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, dyslexia is a neurobiological learning difference, often inherited, that makes reading, writing, and spelling difficult for individuals and that may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience, both of which can impede vocabulary growth, acquisition of knowledge, self-esteem, and career decisions; and

Whereas, dyslexia affects an estimated one in five individuals from all segments of society, regardless of race, income, educational background, or ability; and

Whereas, evidence shows that students with dyslexia thrive with structured, specialized, systematic, multi-sensory, and individualized instruction; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is committed to building an equitable and social learning environment for students, one which is emotionally supportive and identifies and removes obstacles to student success; and

Whereas, the charter for Lakes and Bridges Charter School was approved by the Board of the South Carolina Public Charter School District on April 6, 2017; and

Whereas, Lakes and Bridges Charter School was created to serve the distinct educational needs of students with dyslexia and to provide an unparalleled learning experience for these exceptional students who happen to struggle with the structure of language; and

Whereas, the teachers and staff at Lakes and Bridges Charter School are committed to helping their students find success both in and out of the classroom; and

Whereas, Lakes and Bridges Charter School has paved the way for other innovative, public charter schools in South Carolina to offer specialized instruction for students with dyslexia; and

Whereas, on the anniversary of the charter of the school, the South Carolina House of Representatives, salutes the mission and service of Lakes and Bridges Charter School in educating students with dyslexia. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Lakes and Bridges Charter School for the work of providing an unparalleled learning experience to serve the distinct educational needs of students with dyslexia who may struggle with the structure of language and to declare April 6, 2022, as "Lakes and Bridges Charter School Day" in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Heidi Bishop.
