A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND DR. ABEL BARTLEY FOR HIS DEDICATION TO IDENTIFYING AND PRESERVING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE STATE'S AFRICAN AMERICANS THROUGH SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR RECEIVING THE JANNIE HARRIOT FOUNDERS AWARD FOR HIS UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO THE GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE COMMISSION.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly take great pleasure in honoring those who give their lives for the betterment of their community and whose contributions make the Palmetto State a better place to live, like Dr. Abel Bartley; and

Whereas, Dr. Bartley has devoted his life to uplifting and enlightening others about the contributions of African Americans to the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he has served South Carolina as a professor of history at Clemson University; and

Whereas, Dr. Bartley served as the director of the Pan African Center for Community Studies, and in 2004, he became the director of the African American Studies program, renaming it the Pan African Studies Program, a degree granting program at Clemson University; and

Whereas, in 2007, he was appointed to serve on the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission and has served several terms as its chairperson and vice chairperson; and

Whereas, in recognition of his significant contributions to the growth and sustainability of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission, Dr. Abel Bartley has been honored with the Jannie Harriot Founders Award; and

Whereas, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Bartley is a beloved husband and proud father of two fine daughters. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend Dr. Abel Bartley for his dedication to identifying and preserving the contributions of the state's African Americans through his service as a member of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission and congratulate him for receiving the Jannie Harriot Founders Award for his unwavering commitment to the growth and sustainability of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Abel Bartley.
