A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 26 FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 301 TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 95 IN ORANGEBURG COUNTY "MEDAL OF HONOR HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 26 CONTAINING THESE WORDS.

Whereas, the Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in combat across all branches of the United States military. Established by Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, the award honors a member of the Armed Forces of the United States who has "distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty"; and

Whereas, fewer than four thousand individuals have received this highest honor across our nation's history, including thirty-eight from South Carolina; and

Whereas, South Carolinians are deeply patriotic and have a strong history of supporting the men and women of the United States Armed Forces; and

Whereas, it would only be fitting and proper to salute and pay tribute to these heroes for the supreme sacrifices they have made in protecting the freedom, democracy, and security of our State and nation by naming a portion of Interstate Highway 26 in the Palmetto State in their honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation name the portion of Interstate Highway 26 from its intersection with United States Highway 301 to its intersection with Interstate Highway 95 in Orangeburg County "Medal of Honor Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway containing these words.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
