A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF MRS. JAY TYLER BETETTE OF LAURENS, TO CELEBRATE HER LIFE, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the passing of Mrs. Jay Tyler Betette of Laurens on June 16, 2022, at the venerable age of eighty-four; and

Whereas, born at Fort Benning, Georgia, on March 15, 1938, Jay was the daughter of Orville Zelotes and Allison Durkee Tyler. As a child, she traveled widely since her father, a West Point graduate, served in the military for his entire career. Jay graduated from the University of Georgia in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in English and then received her M.Ed. in speech and hearing from Emory University in 1962; and

Whereas, she married her college sweetheart, Phillip A. "Phil" Betette, that same year, and they went on to live a rich and full life for more than sixty years. Jay held various teaching positions in elementary education and speech therapy. She spent twenty-eight years in the school districts of Greenville and Laurens counties before retiring to become the grandmother any child would love to have; and

Whereas, Jay served on the boards of the Greenville Civic Ballet, Laurens County Arts Council, and Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation and was active in numerous other volunteer groups. She was a member of the Junior League of Greenville and the Florida Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames. This woman of faith, a communicant at Church of the Epiphany in Laurens, passed on to glory in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection; and

Whereas, Mrs. Betette leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Phil; one son, Phillip A. Betette, Jr. (Michelle); one daughter, Allison B. Warren (James III); five grandchildren, James I. Warren IV, Sarah J. Warren, Russell P. Warren, Jackson T. Betette, and Blake R. Betette; one brother, Marshall D.P. Tyler; and a host of other family members and friends. She will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Mrs. Jay Tyler Betette of Laurens, celebrate her life, and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Phillip A. Betette for the family.
