TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DEPUTY MICHAEL MEDLIN OF THE LEXINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, WHO DISPLAYED EXCEPTIONAL COURAGE IN THE FACE OF DANGER WHILE IN THE LINE OF DUTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM UPON RECEIVING THE SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS' ASSOCIATION MEDAL OF VALOR AWARD.
Whereas, on September 5, 2020, Deputy Michael Medlin displayed extraordinary bravery and decisive action. His courage under fire was recognized by his peers and he will be presented with the prestigious South Carolina Sheriff's Association Medal of Valor Award; and
Whereas, the Medal of Valor Award is presented to a deputy sheriff who performs actions above and beyond the call of duty; and who exhibits exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, and presence of mind; or acts with an unusual swiftness, regardless of his or her personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life; and
Whereas, on September 5, 2020, Deputy Michael Medlin, Deputy Brown, and Master Deputy Riccardi responded to a domestic dispute at a home on Eagleview Drive. Upon arrival to the scene, the deputies learned that the victim of the domestic dispute had fled the incident location and was hiding in a neighbor's residence. The officers questioned the victim and learned that the suspect was still inside the residence at the original location, as well as discovering the suspect was in possession of a long gun and a handgun; and
Whereas, Deputy Medlin positioned himself at the front corner of the residence and attempted to make contact with the suspect. After several attempts at communication, the suspect stepped out of the front door and fired a round from a shotgun, striking Deputy Medlin in the head. In response, Deputy Medlin was able to return fire and force the suspect back inside the residence; and
Whereas, as a result of his injuries, Deputy Medlin was transported by patrol car to the hospital, while other responding deputies set a perimeter and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department SWAT team responded. The scene was eventually turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division SWAT team. There was a lengthy stand-off that included the suspect firing at officers once again before he was eventually taken into custody; and
Whereas, the actions taken by Deputy Medlin in the face of danger and in the heat of the moment allowed him to take the necessary steps to protect the lives of others, as well as his own, despite his being wounded and placed in immediate and recognizable danger; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are honored to recognize the heroism and determination of law enforcement officers and first responders like Deputy Michael Medlin who go above and beyond to protect and defend our citizens, putting the safety of others above their own. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Deputy Michael Medlin of the Lexington County Sheriff's Office, who displayed exceptional courage in the face of danger while in the line of duty, and to congratulate him upon receiving the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association Medal of Valor Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Deputy Michael Medlin.
