A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. CHARLES B. JACKSON, SR., UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AS PASTOR OF BROOKLAND BAPTIST CHURCH AND TO HONOR HIM FOR HALF A CENTURY OF MINISTRY TO HIS GOD, HIS CONGREGATION, AND THE WEST COLUMBIA COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to recognize Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., upon the occasion of his golden pastoral anniversary on February 7, 2021; and

Whereas, a native of West Columbia, Charles Jackson was born on July 16, 1952, to the late Mr. Thomas Jackson and Mrs. Ezella Rumph Jackson; and

Whereas, he earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Benedict College, a master's degree of divinity with honors from Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, a doctorate of divinity from Columbia International University, and a doctorate of public service from the University of South Carolina. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity from Morris College and from Benedict College; and

Whereas, Dr. Jackson began preaching at the age of nine, licensed at the age of ten, and ordained at the age of twelve, and he became the pastor at Brookland Baptist Church at the age of eighteen; and

Whereas, under his leadership, Brookland Baptist Church has grown to include over sixty ministries, over one hundred ninety employees, a full-service Federal Credit Union, the Brookland Foundation, the Brookland Center for Community Economic Change, the Brookland-West Columbia Community Housing Development Corporation, the Brookland Community Pediatric Center with Eau Claire Cooperative, and Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center, which was recently sealed as the first historically segregated African American school to receive a state marker in Lexington County; and

Whereas, over the years, Dr. Jackson has led the church into a new sanctuary that seats two thousand three hundred worshippers and into a sixty-eight thousand square-foot Community Resource Center, consisting of an Academy Child Development Center, a Health and Wellness Center, and a Banquet and Conference Center. The church has also opened a second location in northeast Columbia and completed a Christian Learning Center which holds its Youth and Teen Center; and

Whereas, as the spiritual leader for his congregation and community, Dr. Jackson has mentored and trained eighteen sons, one daughter, and a total of seventy-seven ministers; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Robin Hoefer Jackson, he reared two fine children who have blessed him with the affection of six loving grandchildren; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives deeply values the ministry of Charles Jackson and his meaningful ministry to Brookland Baptist Church and the West Columbia community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., upon the occasion of his fiftieth anniversary as pastor of Brookland Baptist Church and honor him for half a century of ministry to his God, his congregation, and the West Columbia community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr.
