Whereas, it is altogether fitting and proper that the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina should pause in its deliberations to express gratitude to Stephanie DuBose Williams for her significant contributions to the South Carolina Department of Social Services; and
Whereas, a lifelong South Carolinian born in Whitmire, Ms. Williams is the daughter of Stephen Richards DuBose and Dorothy Virginia Dillard DuBose, and she earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Queen's University in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1974 with a desire to advocate for South Carolina's vulnerable; and
Whereas, a year later she began formally serving the State as an outreach worker, and since then she has served the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) spanning four decades, most notably as program coordinator of the Special Nutrition Unit and program manager of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR); and
Whereas, Ms. Williams' roles beyond the agency included support for educational extracurricular programs in Richland County schools and implementation of social service programs through Clemson University and the Southern Institute; and
Whereas, during her years of service, she helped launch, manage, and improve a number of projects supporting the people of South Carolina related to SNAP, ongoing communication of federal and state laws, regional access to interpretation and translation, and compliance advisory groups; and
Whereas, Ms. Williams' work with DSS has focused on promoting an agency of nondiscrimination with equitable access to human services, and in doing so, she has frequently assisted the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DI-IHS) and the USDA on Civil Rights' issues; and
Whereas, a devoted and compassionate advocate for equality, families, and social rights, her commitment to civic responsibility and ethical leadership has made a lasting impact on the DSS community, agency clients, and her community; and
Whereas, grateful for her many years of distinguished service to South Carolina DSS, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pleasure in extending best wishes to Stephanie Williams as she transitions to a richly deserved retirement and the leisurely pace of the days ahead as she retires on May 2, 2022, and wish her many years of enjoyment in her well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
