TO CONGRATULATE ADDISON "JACK" GREENE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Addison "Jack" Greene will celebrate this important milestone on May 21, 2021; and
Whereas, a native of Alvin, South Carolina, Addison "Jack" Greene was born on May 21, 1921, as the thirteenth of fourteen children, to the late Willis and Susie Greene. His father gave him the name Absalom, but it was never recorded on his birth certificate. In Jack's youth, he helped around the farm, in the fields, and in his father's workshop; and
Whereas, a veteran of the United States Army, Jack served during World War II as a quartermaster. His tour of duty took him to France, Germany, and England, and he received the American Theater SV Ribbon Eamet SV Medal for Good Conduct; and
Whereas, in the mid 1950s, Jack and his wife started a family business selling barbecue. People traveled from many miles away just to get a taste of their famous sauce. He ultimately passed down the business to his grandson Travis, whom Jack had raised as his own. Over the years, Jack worked many jobs, including in the logging business, at Jamestown Wool Mill, and at a local farm caring for livestock; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, Jack is a faithful, loyal member of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Alvin, where he was baptized at an early age. He is now referred to as the "Father of the Church"; and
Whereas, Jack was married to the love of his life, the late Ruby Moultrie, and together, they had six sons and five daughters, in addition to one son that Jack already had. Today, Jack has forty-four grandchildren; ninety-four great-grandchildren; thirty-seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members; and
Whereas, every year, the family celebrates Jack and Ruby on the Sunday before Memorial Day, on what they call Ruby Jack Day. The first celebration began on Sunday, May 27, 2012; and
Whereas, in his free time, Jack enjoys spending time with his family, driving, riding on his golf cart, entertaining others by playing his musical sticks and harmonica, telling jokes, listening to tapes of singing or preaching, and watching UConn girls basketball or his favorite wrestler Roman Reigns. He regularly participates with the Alvin Senior Citizen program and the Laurel Hill Masonic Lodge; and
Whereas, a compassionate and kind-hearted man, Jack is constantly giving of himself to help the downtrodden, the rejected, the helpless, the needy, and the sick; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate takes great pleasure in honoring this son of South Carolina at the celebration of his one hundredth birthday and is pleased to join with his family and friends in congratulating him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Addison "Jack" Greene on the occasion of his one hundredth birthday and wish him a joyous birthday celebration and much happiness in the days ahead.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Addison "Jack" Greene.
