TO EXPRESS PROFOUND SORROW UPON THE PASSING OF ADDISON "JACK" GREENE, TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS, AND TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME GREENTOWN ROAD IN BERKELEY COUNTY, FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH HARRISTOWN ROAD TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH SANTEE RIVER ROAD, "ADDISON 'JACK' GREENE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS LOCATION CONTAINING THIS DESIGNATION.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Addison "Jack" Greene on August 25, 2021; and
Whereas, a native of Alvin, South Carolina, Jack was born on May 25, 1921, as the thirteenth of fourteen children, to the late Willis and Susie Greene; and
Whereas, a veteran of the United States Army, Jack served during World War II as a quartermaster. His tour of duty took him to France, Germany, and England. He received the American Theater SV Ribbon, the EAMET SV Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal; and
Whereas, in the mid-1950s, Jack and his wife started a family business selling barbecue. Over the years, Jack worked many jobs, including in the logging business, at Jamestown Wool Mill, and at a local farm caring for livestock; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, Jack was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Alvin, where he was baptized at an early age. He is now referred to as the "Father of the Church." A compassionate and kind-hearted man, Jack constantly gave of himself to help those in need; and
Whereas, in May of 2021, the Alvin community celebrated Jack's one hundredth birthday with a parade honoring his legacy in the community; and
Whereas, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby; and
Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his children, Wilma Jane Taylor, Nathaniel (Delores) Greene, Morris Greene, Mary Lee (Ronald) Hunter and Addison "AJ" (Cynthia) Greene, Jr., Annette (David) McBride, Robert Lee Greene, Verna (Russell) Black, Vernon (Barbara) Greene, and grandson, Travis Greene, whom he raised as his own; his forty-four grandchildren, ninety-four great-grandchildren, and thirty-eight great-great grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Louise Greene; Evelyn Simmons, who was like a sister to him; his godchildren, Alphair Ferguson, Emiller "Peaches" Byrd, and KJ Greene; as well as nieces, nephews and host of other family and friends. He will be greatly missed; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to name a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name Greentown Road in Berkeley County, from its intersection with Harristown Road to its intersection with Santee River Road, "Addison 'Jack' Greene Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing this designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of Addison "Jack" Greene.
