A house RESOLUTION

 

To honor Dr. Reshma Khan, director of the National Health Service of the islamic circle of north america (ICNA) Relief USA and founder of the Shifa Free Clinic in Charleston, for her outstanding contributions to the STate of South Carolina.

 

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are proud to honor Dr. Reshma Khan for the great work she has done as the director of the National Health Service of The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief USA, through the Shifa Free Clinic she founded, and as a medical professional; and

 

Whereas. Dr. Kahn completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. She then worked in private practices in Indiana and Maryland before relocating to Charleston in 2007. In Charleston she worked at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center for eight years as a staff physician. While working at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, she founded the Shifa Free Clinic in Charleston through ICNA Relief USA; and

 

Whereas, the Shifa Free Clinic provides compassionate and high-quality medical care for free to uninsured and indigent people in need. The clinic maintains a commitment to medical, organizational, and operational excellence and treats their patients with respect, dignity, and compassion. They also support efforts towards reducing food insecurity; and

 

Whereas, ICNA Relief USA is an organization that seeks to alleviate human suffering by providing caring and compassionate service to victims of adversities and survivors of disasters. As the director of the National Health Service of the ICNA Relief USA, she led a national COVID-19 vaccination outreach and education campaign aimed towards immigrant and underserved populations which reached seven hundred thousand people; and

 

Whereas, Dr. Kahn is an active participant in various interfaith programs in Charleston and has been invited to speak at various churches, the College of Charleston, 9-11 memorial services, and major events including the Women's March on Washington in Charleston. She has been featured in articles and television shows and was named an Everyday Hero by Count 2 News. Additionally, she is a member of the board of trustees for the Sisters of Charity Foundation; and

 

Whereas, well deserving of acclaim, Dr. Khan has received many awards for her efforts. She was awarded the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, was awarded the Public and Community Service Award from the Atlantic Institute in 2019, was highlighted by the Association of American Medical Colleges as a woman making history in communities in 2019, received the YWCA Greater Charleston's #WhatWomenBring award in 2018, was awarded the Prevent Cancer Foundation's Laurels Award for Dedication to Community Service in 2018, was awarded the Women's Rights and Empowerment Network South Carolina Trail Blazer Award in 2018, and won the Trident United Way Women Leadership Council Award for "Non-Profit Leader." Additionally, August 23, 2017, was declared as Reshma Khan Day by the Mayor of Charleston, and she won the Leadership in Diversity Award from the Sisters of Charity Foundation on that same day. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

 

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Dr. Reshma Khan, director of the National Health Service of The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief USA and founder of the Shifa Free Clinic in Charleston, for her outstanding contributions to the State of South Carolina.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Reshma Khan.
