A senate RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE Beatrice Myers Givens ON THE OCCASION OF HER one hundredth BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that Beatrice Myers Givens will celebrate this important milestone on July 17, 2024; and
Whereas, a native of Green Pond, Mrs. Givens was born on July 17, 1924. She spent a semester at Hampton Institute in Virginia and then left college to marry the love of her life, Leroy Givens Sr., in 1941; and
Whereas, for many years, Mrs. Givens worked as head cook of Quarter House Restaurant on Dorchester Road; and
Whereas, a civic leader, Mrs. Givens has served with many community organizations, including as a member of the Green Grove Civic Club, the NAACP, Red Hat Society, and the Charleston Heights Senior Community Club; and
Whereas, her pride and joy has been her involvement with the United Order of Tents, where she has served for sixty years. Her loyalty and service to Whippers Area Tent #154 as leader (now emeritus) continue to provide a beacon of hope to many. As a faithful servant, she remains and serves as the Queen of the Royal Degree Chamber #13 of the Charleston District; and
Whereas, Mrs. Givens has served as the past most noble governor (PMNG) and secretary of the Household of Ruth #2906, the Queen Esther Chapter #166, Order of Eastern Stars, PHA and the Magnolia Temple #1115 Elks. She also served as an election day poll volunteer for several decades; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, she was raised in Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church. Upon moving to Charleston in 1945, she found herself not just providing service in her home, but in the church and community as well. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Methodist Church, later joining Francis Brown Methodist Church, serving as a member of the Senior Choir, Evangelism Board, chair and secretary of the Pastor Parrish Relationship Committee, chair of Food Service, chair of the Annual Calendar Tea, chair of July Birth Month Club, secretary and president of the Trustee Board, president of the United Methodist Women, and member of the Willing Workers and Stewardess Ministry, among other roles; and
Whereas, Mrs. Givens was married to the late Leroy Givens Sr., and together, they had ten children; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate takes great pleasure in honoring this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and is pleased to join with her family and friends in congratulating her. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Beatrice Myers Givens on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and much happiness in the days ahead.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Beatrice Myers Givens.
