A house RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor the students of the Catawba Ridge High School television studio, their advisors, and school officials and to congratulate them for being named the Best Daily Taped News Show and the First Place Anchor Team in the nation.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the students of the Catawba Ridge High School television studio were awarded Best Daily Taped News Show and first place Anchor Team in the nation by the Student Television Network (STN) in Long Beach, California, during competition from March 13 to 18, 2023; and
Whereas, STN is a national convention with schools represented from every state and several countries. Schools competing for the STN national awards came from all over the country, including Hawaii, and several foreign countries.
Whereas, two hundred teams competed in the Anchor Team competition while at the convention. Hannah Watts and Eric Johnson from Catawba Ridge won the national first place for Anchor Team. For the award, anchors were given two hours to write a one-minute script from specific prompts, which was then delivered on camera in one take without any alterations or edits; and
Whereas, over four hundred schools submitted shows for consideration in STN's Broadcast Excellence Award. For the Broadcast Excellence Award for the Daily Taped Show category, two unaltered shows were entered that had been broadcast over dates from a specific date range given by STN. It is the second STN National Award for Best Daily Taped Show for Catawba Ridge; and
Whereas, Catawba Ridge received a second place award in Commentary, second place in Arts and Culture Feature Story, third place in Sports Highlights, and Honorable Mention for a News Story; and
Whereas, the Catawba team has had a star-studded year. The television studio students won the Southern Interscholastic Press Association's (SIPA) Regional All-Southern rating and five first place ribbons for Overall Talent, Short Film, Reporter, Hype Video, and Commentary; and
Whereas, Hannah Watts, executive producer of CRN-TV, won the first place in three individual categories from SIPA: Overall Talent, Reporter, and Hype Video. SIPA has schools from as far south as Florida, as far north as Virginia, and as far west as Mississippi; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the pride and recognition that the television students have brought to their school and to their community, and the members look forward to following their continued accomplishments in the days to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the students of the Catawba Ridge High School television studio, their advisors, and school officials and congratulate them for being named the Best Daily Taped News Show and the First Place Anchor Team in the nation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Darren Wilson and to advisor, Karin McKemey.
