A house RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor reverend samuel l. mcpherson, presiding elder of the lancaster district of the 7th episcopal district of the ame church's columbia conference, as he retires after years of devoted service to the people of south carolina and to wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
Whereas, it is entirely appropriate to honor those individuals who give selflessly of themselves to nurture the souls of men. The Reverend Samuel L. McPherson, presiding elder of the Lancaster District of the 7th Episcopal District of the AME Church's Columbia Conference, stands high as an outstanding minister of the gospel, one greatly respected by his colleagues and community; and
Whereas, born on Edisto Island, Samuel McPherson was born to the late Willie and Edna McPherson. He earned an associate's degree in business administration from Palmer Business College, an associate's in management from Trident Technical College, a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Charleston Southern University, and a bachelor's degree in industrial management from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business; and
Whereas, answering the call of his country, this patriotic American served our great nation in the United States Navy. Upon the completion of his military service, he continued his career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he worked for twenty-seven years until he retired in 1995 as the Shipyard Production Resource Manager. While there, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the highest civilian award given for outstanding service; and
Whereas, Reverend McPherson was licensed to preach in July 1976. He was later ordained itinerant deacon and itinerant elder in 1978 and 1980, respectively, under the late Bishop Frank M. Reid, Jr. Reverend McPherson went on to pastor churches across the State including Bethel AME Church in Denmark, Campbell Chapel AME Church in Bluffton, Queen Chapel AME Church in Hilton Head, Greater St. James AME Church in Summerville, Greater Goodwill AME Church in Mount Pleasant, and Allen Temple AME Church in Greenville; and
Whereas, devoted to his denomination, Reverend McPherson also served as past presiding elder for the Greenville District, the Abbeville-Greenwood District, and is presently serving as the presiding elder of the Lancaster District of the Columbia Conference; and
Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Shirley Johnson McPherson, he reared three fine children, Sam, Odell, and Atiya; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives takes great pleasure in extending best wishes to Samuel McPherson as he transitions to a richly deserved retirement and the unhurried pace of the days ahead, and the members wish him many delightful years in his well-earned retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Samuel L. McPherson, presiding elder of the Lancaster District of the 7th Episcopal District of the AME Church's Columbia Conference, as he retires after years of devoted service to the people of South Carolina and wish him continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Samuel L. McPherson.
