A concurrent RESOLUTION
TO request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of south carolina Highway 45 and US Highway 52 in St. Stephen in Berkley County "Dr. Sam Schumann Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
Whereas, Dr. Schumann was born to parents Franz Bernard Schumann and Sarah Owens Schumann on Sept. 14, 1925, in Oakland, California; and
Whereas, Dr. Shumann was an alumnus of Furman University and the Medical University of the University of South Carolina. He was the first board-certified medical practitioner in Berkeley County; and
Whereas, Dr. Schumann opened his private medical practice in St. Stephen in 1956. He was the only physician serving the entire northern Berkeley County region for many years; and
Whereas, Dr. Schumann has dedicated half a century of his time, energy, and expertise to the people of St. Stephen and surrounding areas, making innumerable house calls, providing lifesaving emergency medical treatment, and delivering countless newborns; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, Dr. Shumann was a lay minister and member of the St. Stephen Episcopal Church. He passed away on November 3, 2009; and
Whereas, it would be only fitting and proper to pay tribute to this son of South Carolina by naming a portion of road in the State in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection of South Carolina Highway 45 and US Highway 52 in St. Stephen in Berkley County "Dr. Sam Schumann Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this location containing the designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and presented to the family of Dr. Sam Schumann.
