A house RESOLUTION
TO HONOR THE NORTHWESTERN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACHES ON THEIR IMPRESSIVE WIN OF THE 2024 CLASS AAAAA DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Whereas, in a wild 34-31 title game, the Northwestern High School football team drove past top contender Irmo to finish the season 14-0 and nail the 2024 Class AAAAA Division II State Championship on Saturday, December 14, 2024; and
Whereas, at this epic contest, the momentum Northwestern had brought to the game kept on going for the Trojans and paid off. Orangeburg's Oliver Dawson Stadium echoed with the cheers of exuberant Northwestern fans, pleased to see their confident predictions of victory realized as a satisfying end to an undefeated season; and
Whereas, such victories do not come overnight; they take determination and hard work. With proven consistency in both, Northwestern's Head Coach Page Wofford built his football program into a championship team that refused to settle for second best; and
Whereas, at the end of this riveting back-and-forth contest, senior kicker Matthew Fish sent a 27-yard field goal well above the uprights as time expired, capping another stellar performance from quarterback Finley Polk and Northwestern's high-powered offense; and
Whereas, it was the sixth state championship in school history for Northwestern and the school's first since 2015. In addition, this win marked the Trojans' second state-title game appearance in the past three years; and
Whereas, the Trojans have given their school and community reason to be proud of their accomplishments, and the members of the House of Representatives take great pleasure in adding their collective voice to the many encomiums flowing in to this outstanding group of young athletes. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor the Northwestern High School football team and coaches on their impressive win of the 2024 Class AAAAA Division II State Championship.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Michael Abraham and Head Coach Page Wofford of Northwestern High School.
