VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
A house RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE Oceanside Collegiate Academy football TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR A truly REMARKABLE SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2024 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Oceanside Collegiate Academy football team of Charleston County captured the trophy at the state championship game held on Saturday, December 14, 2024; and
Whereas, to the cheers of their exuberant fans, the Oceanside Landsharks faced a fine Belton-Honea Path High School for the second time in a row to take their second consecutive state title 35-17, after moving from Class AA to Class AAA in 2024 and losing their head coach after the first game of the season; and
Whereas, after a rocky 2-3 start to the season, Oceanside went on to win nine straight games, culminating in the program's second state championship and a season record of 11-3; and
Whereas, sophomore quarterback for the Landsharks, Aidan Manavian, led his team to win the 2023 state title and in the 2024 game. He completed 21 of 26 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns. Oceanside's Will Virgilio caught five of them for 134 yards, along with Peyton Shaw who caught five for 66 yards. Gavin Gaspar had four catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and junior running back Terrence Johnson had five receptions for 57 yards and a score; and
Whereas, the Landsharks opened the scoring when Aidan Manavian connected with Terrence Johnson on a nine-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. The Belton-Honea Path Bears responded in the second quarter, but Oceanside posted two more touchdowns from Peyton Shaw and Terrence Johnson to take the half with a 21-7 lead; and
Whereas, Belton-Honea Path scored again at the end of the third quarter of play, cutting the Landsharks' lead to 21-14, before the Bears cut the lead further with a field goal before the quarter ended, slashing the Landsharks' lead to 21-17. In the fourth quarter Oceanside dominated as Gavin Gaspar caught two passes and ran for two touchdowns for the game-winning score of 35-17; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, strategy, and determination, interim Head Coach John Patterson and his skilled coaching staff maximized their own athletic experience and training to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the gridiron; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives values the pride and recognition that the Oceanside football players have brought to their school and their community, and the members look forward to following their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Oceanside Collegiate Academy football team, coaches, and school officials for a truly remarkable season and congratulate them for winning the 2024 South Carolina Class AAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Christina Brown and Coach John Patterson.
