A house RESOLUTION
TO CELEBRATE THE PEE DEE ACADEMY GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM ON ITS 2025 WIN OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO CONGRATULATE THE LADY GOLDEN EAGLES ON THEIR IMPRESSIVE OVERALL RECORD OF FOUR STATE TITLE WINS.
Whereas, ready for what they knew would be a battle for four quarters, the Pee Dee Academy girls basketball team edged Orangeburg Prep to capture the 2025 South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) 3A State Championship, held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Sumter Civic Center; and
Whereas, the knock-down, drag-out defensive battle between Pee Dee and Orangeburg saw the Lady Golden Eagles, who played with grit, heart, and passion, prevailing over the Indians. The closest Orangeburg Prep would come to victory was a three-point basket with 2.9 seconds left that cut the deficit to 37-34, which became the final score when time expired before another shot could be attempted; and
Whereas, the starting five for Pee Dee Academy consisted of Claire Eskridge, leading scorer Rebecca Hammond, Claire Owens, Sydney King, and inside player Katie Estes. During the game, Rebecca Hammond had some great senior moments for Pee Dee with 17 points, and Claire Owens was next with 10 points. Claire Eskridge and Katie Estes contributed three points each, and Sydney King and Caroline Elvington had two points each; and
Whereas, to give even more sweetness to an already highly satisfying victory, the title game earned Pee Dee (23-4) its fourth all-time state championship in girls basketball, the previous three titles being for 2001, 2004, and 2008. Moreover, Claire Eskridge, Rebecca Hammond, and Claire Owens of Pee Dee were named to the SCISA Girls AAA All-Tournament team; and
Whereas, such victories do not come overnight; they take determination and hard work. With proven consistency in both, Head Coach Meagan Thomas has built her girls basketball program into one of championship caliber and trained her athletes not to settle for second best; and
Whereas, the Lady Golden Eagles have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and the House is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such an outstanding group of young athletes. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, celebrate the Pee Dee Academy girls basketball team on its 2025 win of the South Carolina Independent School Association Class 3A State Championship title and congratulate the Lady Golden Eagles on their impressive overall record of four state title wins.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head of School Allyson Carmichael and Head Coach Meagan Thomas of Pee Dee Academy.
