A house RESOLUTION
To recognize and honor Danny Hyatt, a paramedic with the Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services, and to congratulate him on being named the 2024 Paramedic of the Year.
Whereas, in proud tradition of the sons of South Carolina, Danny Hyatt joined the South Carolina Army National Guard in Eastover in 2015 before graduation from high school, and he has served there to the present as a combat medic specialist. After graduating in 2016 with high honors from Andrew Jackson High School in Kershaw, he joined Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services (LCEMS); and
Whereas, as he began his service with the National Guard, he was an honor graduate of Basic Combat Training in 2016. He earned the Army Commendation Medal twice, in July 2020 and August 2022, and proudly served a tour of duty in Kuwait, being promoted to sergeant in September 2021; and
Whereas, Mr. Hyatt earned certification as a national registry emergency medical technician-advanced in 2018 from Lenoir Community College in Kinston, North Carolina. In 2019, he earned national registry emergency medical technician-paramedic certification from the South Carolina Midlands EMS in West Columbia. He earned an associate degree of applied science in emergency medical technology cum laude from Horry-Georgetown Technical College in 2020 and a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in emergency medical services administration from Columbia Southern University in 2024; and
Whereas, as a field training specialist, he trains new hires and assists with inservice training classes for continuing education. He is a Lancaster County tactical medic, a member of the LCEMS Honor Guard, a member of the Always Ready Emergency Troupe, and an emergency medical technician (EMT) Boot Camp instructor. He assists in teaching the EMT class at the local high school and is the Bike Team coordinator and a lead instructor in the local First Responder Program. He was promoted recently to teach the very first in-house paramedic course in the State; and
Whereas, teaching a wide range of paramedic students from various branches of the military, Sergeant Hyatt uses highly advanced audio, visual, and environmental special effects to enhance the realism of training, teaching his students advanced trauma procedures and using perfused human cadaver specimens. He has been a spirited advocate for the state's implementation of cutting edge tactical combat casualty care training techniques that can revolutionize the delivery of medical training; and
Whereas, Sergeant Hyatt's contributions have played a pivotal role in ensuring that military families will be reunited with their loved ones at the end of an overseas deployment. His influence on the future of medical training and the knowledge he has imparted to his students have made a profound impact, extending across the globe wherever those students are deployed; and
Whereas, recently with Lancaster County EMS during a cardiac-arrest call, he was attacked by a dog while treating the patient during a very busy time when all other trucks were out on calls. He and his EMT partner managed to get themselves and the patient in the back of their ambulance where it was safe. They headed to the hospital Code 3 traffic, and about six miles into transport, the tire blew on the ambulance, and they were stranded. His patient care and composure never altered, and moments later, another truck was able to meet them, and they swapped ambulances and resumed transport; and
Whereas, in spite of working a very heavy schedule as a paramedic, Mr. Hyatt is dedicated to helping others. He volunteered to take supplies to the North Carolina mountains in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and took part recently in the Polar Plunge to raise money for local children with special needs; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the high standard that Danny Hyatt sets first and foremost for himself and for those around him, a soul who has been faithful to his earthly calling as a paramedic in order to protect the citizens of Lancaster County. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Danny Hyatt, a paramedic with the Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services, and congratulate him on being named the 2024 Paramedic of the Year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Danny Hyatt.
