A house RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF MARYANN C. RILEY OF SPARTANBURG AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of MaryAnn C. Riley of Spartanburg on March 14, 2025, at the venerable age of 88; and

Whereas, born on August 9, 1936, in Madison, Wisconsin, MaryAnn was raised in a home that instilled the values of faith, family, and service, which she embodied throughout her life, whether as a wife, mother, educator, mentor, or political leader; and

Whereas, MaryAnn's commitment to conservative leadership and community service was evident in her decades of work with the Republican Party and the Spartanburg County Republican Women's Club, Veterans Last Patrol, and BlueStar Mothers of America. She was passionate about engaging, educating, and empowering future generations, always encouraging them to "Read, Think, and Act." Her influence reached beyond her local community, inspiring countless individuals nationwide; and

Whereas, a devout Catholic, MaryAnn's faith was the foundation of her life. She lived by Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Her compassion, humility, and servant's heart reflected the love of Christ in everything she did. Her strong belief in God guided her life, and she encouraged others to seek his wisdom and guidance; and

Whereas, MaryAnn's impact went far beyond politics and community service. She was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding force for many, and her legacy will continue through those she inspired. In particular, her spirit will live on through the Lady in Red movement, a powerful initiative designed to empower conservative women and carry on MaryAnn's vision for leadership and advocacy; and

Whereas, MaryAnn Riley leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Wayne Riley; her son, Mike Riley (Julie); her grandchildren, Tara Riley, Jessica Greer (Paul), Kaden Greer, and Adalyn Greer; her brother, Dr. Francis Shembab (Barbara); and a host of other family members and friends; and

Whereas, the people of South Carolina were made better by MaryAnn Riley's service and influence and will greatly miss her impactful presence. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the passing of MaryAnn C. Riley of Spartanburg and extend the deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family.
