A house RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE SAMUEL PAUKOVITZ, JASON MARSHAL, TANAY SANGHANI, AND DIYA BALAMURUGAN FOR WINNING THE 2025 SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOLASTIC CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CATEGORIES, TO WISH THEM GOOD LUCK IN THE NATIONAL COMPETITION, AND TO THANK THE MEMBERS OF THE COLUMBIA CHESS CLUB FOR SPONSORING THE EVENT.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the Columbia Chess Club sponsored the 2025 South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championship at the Columbia Convention Center, which kicked off on March 22, 2025, with 189 players competing in what is a statewide event limited to residents of South Carolina or students who attend school in South Carolina; and
Whereas, the top eight in each section of elementary, middle, and high school competed again on April 5, 2025, for the final round of competition, and the winners included: Samuel Paukovitz, high school champion, of Fort Mill High School; Jason Marshal, middle school champion, of Bank Trails Middle School; and Tanay Sanghani, elementary school champion, of Sterling School Charles Townes Center. Diya Balamurugan of Pleasant Knoll Elementary School won the girls' state championship on April 12, 2025, which had twenty-two competitors; and
Whereas, these student-competitors will represent South Carolina on the national stage in Middleton, Wisconsin, at the United States Chess Federation competition on July 28 through 31, 2025, showcasing the talent and dedication of the Palmetto State's young chess champions; and
Whereas, over the past few years, the Columbia Chess Club has made significant strides in promoting chess throughout South Carolina, notably through hosting the largest open chess tournament in the state's history, establishing its own brick-and-mortar location in Columbia, and organizing a variety of events that cater to players of all ages and skill levels. Deeply committed to making a positive impact in the Midlands through the game of chess, the Columbia Chess Club is dedicated to fostering the value of intellectual pursuits and greater engagement in the club's programs; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the Columbia Chess Club which has been a cornerstone for chess enthusiasts in the Midlands and across the State by fostering community, sportsmanship, and intellectual growth through this timeless game and celebrates the accomplishments of champions Samuel Paukovitz, Jason Marshal, Tanay Sanghani, and Diya Balamurugan. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Samuel Paukovitz, Jason Marshal, Tanay Sanghani, and Diya Balamurugan for winning the 2025 South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championship in their respective categories, wish them good luck in the national competition, and thank the members of the Columbia Chess Club for sponsoring the event.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to James Brandmair, president of the Columbia Chess Club.
