A senate RESOLUTION

 

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MAY RIVER HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM FOR A STELLAR SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THE SHARKS ON WINNING THE 2025 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the May River High School wrestling team captured the Class AAAA top prize at this year's state tournament, held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Dreher High School in Columbia; and

 

Whereas, to the cheers of their delighted fans, the May River Sharks won their first-ever state wrestling crown and thus made school history, an accomplishment that made a sweet victory even sweeter; and

 

Whereas, May River defeated Brookland-Cayce, South Florence, Gilbert, and Aiken on the way to the state finals. At state, May River faced a very strong and senior-heavy Laurens team, and the Sharks found themselves down 35-11 with five matches to go. Down 24 points with a maximum of 30 points remaining, the Sharks were not in an ideal spot. However, the May River heavyweight, 106, 113, and 120 all came away with bonus-point wins, which put the match at 33-35 with one match left. At that point, May River's 126 defeated Laurens 8-1, delivering to the Sharks the one-point team win and the state title; and

 

Whereas, possibly the biggest comeback in the history of South Carolina high school wrestling, this impressive victory happened in only the ninth year of May River High's existence. Hard work and commitment from wrestlers, coaches, and families were the foundation that pushed the team to the title. Moreover, these newly minted champion wrestlers kept their strong momentum going by seizing the SCWCA Traditional State title two weeks later; and

 

Whereas, in a sport that demands mental fortitude and stamina, Head Coach Ashley Powell capitalized on his own athletic ability and experience to forge a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable throughout life, both on and off the mats; and

 

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate appreciates the pride and recognition the May River wrestlers have brought to their school and community, and the members look forward to following their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the Senate:

 

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the May River High School wrestling team for a stellar season and congratulate the Sharks on winning the 2025 Class AAAA State Championship title.

 

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal KaRon Webb and Head Coach Ashley Powell of May River High School.
