A house RESOLUTION
to recognize and honor Captain John McMahan, supervisor of the firearms and driving range at the south carolina criminal justice academy, for his exceptional performance while representing the palmetto state at numerous shooting events.
Whereas, for twenty-seven years, Captain John McMahan has worked at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy where he currently serves as supervisor of the firearms and driving range. During an impressive twenty-seven-year tenure, he has received numerous awards for outstanding marksmanship as a representative of the State, the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, and the state's first responders; and
Whereas, by the end of 2024, Captain McMahan had earned a total of one hundred seventy medals in skeet, trap, and sporting clays, including one hundred four gold medals, fifty-one silver medals, and fifteen bronze medals; and
Whereas, during the June 2024 Georgia Police and Fire Games held in Columbus, Captain McMahan earned a fourth consecutive gold medal for South Carolina during the course of a one-day event. In July he attended the biannual CAN/AM Police/Fire Games in Butler, Pennsylvania, for a three-day shotgun shooting event that also included competitors from Finland. At the end of the competition, Captain McMahan was awarded four gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals; and
Whereas, as an attendant at the First Responder Games in Palm Beach, Florida, in September of that year, Captain McMahan earned another cadre of medals. This annual event offers Olympic-style competition in more than twenty-five sports and is open to all local, state, federal, and military first responders. After three days of shooting some four hundred fifty targets, McMahan's medal count included six gold, four silver, and a bronze; and
Whereas, as a representative of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Captain McMahan participated in three shooting events in 2024. In April, he won the top shooter award at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association Annual Shoot in Edgefield, thirty-three years after winning the same award at this event's first competition in 1991; and
Whereas, Captain McMahan was a member of the first-place winning teams at the South Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers Association First Annual Shoot in Edgefield in September 2024, and the Midlands Crimestoppers Annual Shoot, also in Edgefield held in October. No individual awards are given at either competition; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives deeply appreciates the pride and recognition that John McMahan has brought to this State and to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, and the members look forward to hearing of his continued success in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Captain John McMahan, supervisor of the firearms and driving range at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, for his exceptional performance while representing the Palmetto State at numerous shotgun shooting events.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Captain John McMahan.
