A senate RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE Gennie B. Hudgens Harpe OF Greenville COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ninetieTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted to learn that Gennie B. Hudgens Harpe of Greenville County will celebrate her ninetieth birthday on May 23, 2025; and
Whereas, born on May 23, 1935, early in the twentieth century, she has witnessed the many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the first quarter of the twenty-first century; and
Whereas, the oldest of six children, Gennie is the daughter of Robert L. Hudgens and Geneva Makins Hudgens, and she was reared in a joyful home with siblings Louella, Hasker, Sarah, Velda, and Stanley.
She attended elementary school in Laurens and graduated in 1953 from Sterling High School in Greenville. She was an active member of the Sterling Class of 1953, attending monthly meetings and functions until meetings were no longer held due to COVID; and
Whereas, together with her beloved husband, Freddie L. Harpe, she reared eight fine children: Freddie Jr., Anthony, DecQuency, Ethel, Lorraine, Nathan, Michelle, and Darrell. Because he served in the United States Army, they traveled extensively; and
Whereas, Mrs. Harpe's children blessed her with the affection of twelve adoring grandchildren, and she has been blessed to see the continuation of her faithful family legacy in fifteen great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, upon her husband's retirement from military service, the family moved back to their hometown of Greenville where she worked part time as an anesthesia technician for the Greenville Hospital System; and
Whereas, a long-time and faithful member of Mt. View Baptist Church, Mrs. Harpe sang in the choir as a youth. She served the congregation there as a Sunday school teacher and as president of Circle #7 Missionary and of the Women's Missionary Union. She frequently drove the church van to various church conventions and associations meetings; and
Whereas, dedicated to her community, she served as the vice president of the Enoree River Women's Association and as the recording secretary for the Sally Barksdale Walking Doll Contest of the Enoree River Women's Association. She took joy in going to nursing homes to visit the sick and shut ins; and
Whereas, devoted to her friends and family, Mrs. Harpe has driven her husband, mother, children, grands, or other family members and friends over the years to various doctor appointments, school, the grocery store, or wherever they needed to be; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her ninetieth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Gennie B. Hudgens Harpe of Greenville County on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Gennie B. Hudgens Harpe.
