A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF THE MOST REVEREND ERNEST L. UNTERKOEFLER, FORMER BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF CHARLESTON, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS MANY FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS.

Whereas, the Most Reverend Ernest L. Unterkoefler, former Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, died peacefully on January 4, 1993, after a long illness; and

Whereas, Bishop Unterkoefler was named a bishop by Pope John XXIII in 1962 and was appointed the tenth bishop for the statewide Catholic Diocese of Charleston in December, 1964, by Pope Paul VI; and

Whereas, Bishop Unterkoefler held the post as leader of the Catholic Church in South Carolina for twenty-five years, relinquishing the office in February, 1990, and he will be remembered for many accomplishments and activities, but probably especially for his endeavors in the areas of ecumenical growth and development with other Christian denominations, the attainment of social justice and civil rights for the underprivileged, and fostering Christian-Jewish dialogue and relations; and

Whereas, he was regarded as a learned, even brilliant, man who enjoyed lively debates on an endless number of topics and who was devoted to his flock in his beloved, adopted State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he was an individual who, in the view of the General Assembly, is greatly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of the Most Reverend Ernest L. Unterkoefler, former Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, and extend sympathy to his many friends and admirers.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Most Reverend David B. Thompson, Bishop of Charleston, at Charleston, South Carolina.
