EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF MAJOR SPENCER GUERRY, GEORGETOWN DEPUTY CHIEF OF POLICE, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Major Spencer Guerry, the thirty-seven-year-old deputy chief of police of Georgetown, died Wednesday, March 9, 1994, from a head wound he sustained in the line of duty two days earlier when he was gunned down on Highmarket Street in Georgetown; and
Whereas, Major Guerry was an immensely popular and highly respected and admired law enforcement officer and was a fifteen-year police veteran; and
Whereas, he was the father of two young boys and the husband of an elementary school teacher; and
Whereas, the shooting and the death of Deputy Chief Guerry have left the Georgetown community in a state of shock and deeply saddened; and
Whereas, Deputy Chief Guerry grew up in the Jamestown section of Berkeley County, graduated from Macedonia High School in 1974, was hired as a city policeman in 1979 at age twenty, and was promoted through the ranks thereafter; and
Whereas, he was an outstanding police officer and was involved in the community, contributing his time and talents without hesitation; and
Whereas, it will take a very long time for the people of Georgetown to overcome the shock and sadness they feel as a result of this senseless tragedy; and
Whereas, this courageous young police officer has made the ultimate sacrifice, and we want his family and his many friends to know that they are uppermost in our thoughts and that they have our prayers and support. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express profound sorrow at the death of Major Spencer Guerry, Georgetown deputy chief of police, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Major Guerry's family and to Roger C. Haddix, Chief of Police of Georgetown.
