A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO SALUTE THE LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF TEAM, COACH, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON WINNING THE 2014 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Lexington High School girls golf team took top honors at the state competition, held October 27-28, 2014, at Wescott Plantation in Charleston; and

Whereas, defeating Spartanburg by 27 shots over the two days of competition, the Lady Wildcats' victory handed Lexington High its third straight title and its tenth in the last eleven years; and

Whereas, Lexington opened play with 4 over par 292, establishing a 20-shot lead over Spartanburg. The Lady Wildcats then followed a strong first round with a solid second day of play by posting a 297, thus increasing their lead to the final margin of 27 strokes; and

Whereas, senior Lauren Stephenson won her second consecutive Class AAAA individual title by shooting 69-67 for a state-record two-day total of 136 (8 under par). Ann Elizabeth Gore, Hailey Cleary, and Gracyn Burgess joined Region 5 Class AAAA Player of the Year Lauren Stephenson on the All-Region team; and

Whereas, also tapped for the All-State team was freshman Gracyn Burgess, who finished with back-to-back birdies to card a final round 71 (1 under par) and wrap it up with a two-day total of 145. Junior Hailey Cleary finished tied for twelfth at 150 after rounds of 74-76, and senior Ann Elizabeth Gore just missed the Top 20 by posting rounds of 75-83. Also contributing were freshmen Abby Gore (92) and Katie Koesters (89); and

Whereas, in a sport that demands careful strategy and patient skill, Coach Brandon Smith used his own athletic ability and training to build a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable throughout life, both on and off the fairways and greens; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition the Lexington High School golfers have brought to their school and community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, salute the Lexington High School girls golf team, coach, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them on winning the 2014 Class AAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Melissa Rawl and Coach Brandon Smith.
