AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE AIKEN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, FOR THE 1981-82 TAX YEAR AND IN ENSUING YEARS, TO LEVY A MAXIMUM OF 96.4 MILLS FOR THE OPERATION OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF AIKEN COUNTY, TO SPECIFY THAT THE ADDITIONAL 4.4 MILLS AUTHORIZED OVER THE 1979-80 LEVY SHALL BE USED EXCLUSIVELY TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE EDUCATION FINANCE ACT OF 1977, AND TO AUTHORIZE THE BOARD TO LEVY NOT MORE THAN ELEVEN ADDITIONAL MILLS ABOVE THE 96.4 MILL MAXIMUM UPON THE APPROVAL THEREOF BY THE QUALIFIED ELECTORS OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN A REFERENDUM.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Board authorized to levy tax
SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Aiken County Board of Education is hereby authorized to levy for the operation of the School District of Aiken County in 1981-82 and in ensuing years a tax in an amount not to exceed 96.4 mills. The additional 4.4 mills that the 96.4 mills constitutes over the 1979-80 levy shall be used exclusively to comply with the local support requirements of Act 163 of 1977 (Education Finance Act).
Electors may authorize additional tax
SECTION 2. Notwithstanding Section 2 of Act 571 of 1980, in addition to the 96.4 mills authorized by Section 1 of this act, not more than eleven additional mills may be levied by the Board if such additional levy is approved by the qualified electors of the School District in a referendum called for such purpose by the Aiken County Board of Education.
Time for calling referendum
SECTION 3. The referendum provided by this act shall be called by the Aiken County Board of Education prior to December 31, 1981.
Time effective
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
