The Senate assembled at 11:00 A.M., the hour to which it stood adjourned and was called to order by the PRESIDENT.
A quorum being present the proceedings were opened with a devotion by the Chaplain as follows:
Beloved, the Prophet Jeremiah also lived in unsettling times, and declared to his people (9:23-24) (NEB):
"These are the words of the Lord:
'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
nor the valiant of his valour;
Let not the rich man boast of his riches;
But if any man would boast, let him boast
of this, that he understands and knows Me.
For I am the Lord, I show unfailing love,
I do justice and right upon the earth;
for on these I have set My heart.
This is the very word of the Lord.'"
Let us pray.
Lord God, we thank Thee for the healing you have given to the body of Thy servant, our friend, Horace Smith - and for his return to his labors with us.
As we seek to define and implement our responsibilities at home and abroad, we pray for our President, our Governor, and the legislatures across this land. We pray for those who fashion the laws... for those who interpret the laws... for the custodians of the law... and for those, who often at the risk of their own lives, enforce the law.
As we go to our tasks this day, teach us to be aware of the ripple effect of what we think... and say... and do this day.
In the spirit of Him who went about Galilee... doing good.
Amen.
