A JOINT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE COMMISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO INSTRUCT THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT TO ISSUE GENERAL WILLIAM C. WESTMORLAND A SPECIAL LICENSE PLATE PURSUANT TO ARTICLE 43, CHAPTER 3 OF TILE 56 OF THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO RETIRED MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES, SO AS TO HONOR GENERAL WESTMORLAND BY ISSUING HIM THE SPECIAL LICENSE PLATE WITH THE WORDS "U.S. ARMED SERVICES, RETIRED" WHICH DISPLAYS THE NUMBER "1".

Whereas, General William C. Westmorland graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, and distinguished himself with many honors; and

Whereas, his long and distinguished military record includes Superintendent of the United States Military Academy; Commander, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam; and Chief of Staff of the Army; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly recognize his many accomplishments and outstanding contributions to our State and wish to honor General William C. Westmorland by the issuance of a special military retiree license plate which displays the number "1". Now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Pursuant to Article 43, Chapter 3 of Title 56 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, the Commission of the Department of Highways and Public Transportation is requested to instruct the Executive Director of the department to issue, upon payment of the requisite fees, a special license plate with the words "U.S. Armed Forces, Retired" to General William C. Westmorland which displays the number "1".

SECTION 2. A copy of this resolution must be forwarded to the Department of Highways and Public Transportation Commission and to General William C. Westmorland.

SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
