TO DIRECT THE COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION TO ESTABLISH A TASK FORCE TO STUDY AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON IMPROVING TEACHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING AND ON STRENGTHENING THE MULTICULTURAL COMPONENT OF TEACHER EDUCATION.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The Commission on Higher Education shall form a task force to study and make recommendations for improving teacher education and training, in-service training, continuing education, and the requirements for certification of teachers and the accreditation of teacher training programs. The committee also shall study and make recommendations on strengthening and broadening the multicultural component of teacher education, including preparation for teaching in minority, low-income, and rural school settings. The committee must be comprised of no more than fifteen members and include representation from the Department of Education, classroom teachers, and higher education, including representation from colleges or universities with teacher education and training programs. The committee shall coordinate its efforts with those of any national efforts taking place in South Carolina to revise teacher education. The committee shall report and make recommendations to the General Assembly by January 1, 1994.
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
