EXPRESSING SYMPATHY TO THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF JOHN BIRKS "DIZZY" GILLESPIE OF CHERAW IN CHESTERFIELD COUNTY WHO DIED JANUARY 6, 1993, AND RECOGNIZING HIS TALENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF JAZZ.
Whereas, John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was born in Cheraw, South Carolina on October 21, 1917; and
Whereas, the son of a brickmason and one of nine children, he was recognized at an early age of having exceptional musical abilities; and
Whereas, in the early 1940's along with Charlie Parker, he initiated "bebop", in the sleek intense high speed sound that has become jazz's most enduring style; and
Whereas, throughout his sixty-year career, John Birks Gillespie, more fondly known as "Dizzy", has contributed greatly to the jazz world by serving as a composer, band leader, and innovative musician; and
Whereas, Gillespie wrote or co-wrote many songs that became jazz standards including "A Night in Tunisia," "Groovin' High," "Manteca," "Salt Peanuts," and "Woody 'n You"; and
Whereas, while performing three hundred concerts a year worldwide in the 60's and 70's, he collected awards from Grammys to the Kennedy Center Honor in 1990, as well as numerous doctorate degrees; and
Whereas, "Dizzy" Gillespie, acknowledged to be the founding father of jazz, had always conducted himself in a manner that has brought honor and respect for him personally, and has been a source of great pride for the residents of his home state. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members express their sympathy to the friends and family of John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie who died January 6, 1993, and recognizing his talents and contributions to the development of jazz.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Margaret Malloy, 108 Prestige Park, Cheraw, S. C., 29520, and Mr. Norman Powe, 113 Clyde Avenue, Cheraw, S. C., 29520.
