TO AMEND SECTION 50-11-500, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE TO WILD TURKEYS, SO AS TO DELETE THE REFERENCE TO A DESIGNATED AGENT OF THE WILDLIFE AND MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT ISSUING TURKEY TRANSPORTATION TAGS AT NO COST, DELETE THE BAG LIMIT FOR TURKEYS, CHANGE THE REFERENCE TO "HUNTER" TO "PERSON", AND AUTHORIZE THE DEPARTMENT TO ESTABLISH BAG LIMITS; AND TO AMEND SECTION 50-11-530, RELATING TO TURKEY HUNTING, SO AS TO DELETE THE BAG LIMITS FOR TURKEYS IN GAME ZONES 6 AND 11.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 50-11-500(10) of the 1976 Code is amended to read:
"(10) A person who hunts or attempts to hunt a wild turkey is required to have in his possession a set of wild turkey transportation tags issued by the department or its designated agent at no cost. A All wild turkey killed turkeys must be tagged before being transported from the point of kill. All bagged wild turkeys must be checked at a designated wild turkey check station. The daily bag limit for wild turkeys is two a day, not to exceed five during any one license year, and no person may take more than two wild turkeys during an open fall season. No hunter person may possess more than one set of turkey tags. A set consists of not more than five tags. The department may establish seasonal bag limits for wild turkey between one and five based upon biological needs of the turkey population. The department may establish daily bag limits consistent with the recommended seasonal bag limits of wild turkeys."
SECTION 2. Section 50-11-530 of the 1976 Code is amended to read:
"Section 50-11-530. The commission may, at its discretion, may prescribe methods by which turkeys may be taken in each game zone and may fix the specific areas of the zones in which turkeys have become numerous enough to be harvested. The commission may designate the sex of the turkeys that may be taken and may prescribe any other regulations considered necessary and expedient for the proper control of the harvesting of turkeys in the zones. The bag limit for turkeys in Game Zones 6 and 11 is not more than two male turkeys a day and not more than five male turkeys a season."
SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
