COMMENDING CAPTAIN HOMER THOMAS HIERS, JR., CHC, USN, FOR HIS CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND FOR HIS SERVICE TO HIS STATE AND NATION, AND EXTENDING CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES TO HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Captain Homer Thomas Hiers, Jr., CHC, USN, has brought honor to himself, his family, the State of South Carolina, and to his country through his thirty years of distinguished military service; and
Whereas, Captain Hiers is being separated from his service to the United States Navy and is transferring to the Reserve Fleet in retirement; and
Whereas, he is being honored on the occasion of his retirement by the conferring of the Order of the Palmetto; and
Whereas, he has throughout his career served gallantly, being distinguished by his being awarded the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, the Bronze Star on two occasions, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal on four occasions, and has been recognized for his exceptional service through the presentation of more than thirty medals, ribbons, and awards, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation and the Kuwait Liberation Medal; and
Whereas, Captain Hiers' actions have had significant impact on the Charleston area civilian population during his three years of service as Command Chaplain-Naval Station Charleston through his efforts for the Sharing Thanksgiving Committee and his service to the Mayor's Council on the Homeless; and
Whereas, Captain Hiers will be continuing his service to his fellowman through his acceptance of the pastorate of Grays Hill Baptist Church in Beaufort County, in which county he has chosen to make his retirement home. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Captain Homer Thomas Hiers, Jr., CHC, USN, for his career accomplishments and for his service to the State of South Carolina and the nation and extends congratulations and best wishes to him upon his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Captain Hiers.
